The standard definition for my budgeting class is,<\/p>\n

“The Budget is a plan, rooted in money and based on a series of assumptions, related to venue, time and expectation that represents to ourselves and others how we will proceed to achieve a goal.”<\/p>\n

In establishing or creating a budget for project, season or what have you you need to ask a series of questions.<\/p>\n

  1. What is the story we are trying to tell<\/li>\n
  2. What is the expectation<\/strong> we are working with\n
      \n
    1. From the organization and the artist and who is providing the information<\/li>\n
    2. Profit, non profit, commercial…what is the nature of the business model<\/li>\n
    3. What is the expected income base<\/li>\n
    4. What are the funding sources\n
        \n
      1. Are\u00c2\u00a0there\u00c2\u00a0associated\u00c2\u00a0requirements\n
          \n
        1. Accounting expectations, restrictions etc<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
        2. What is the time line of the project<\/span><\/li>\n
        3. Where does it fit in the season (if appropriate)<\/span><\/li>\n
        4. What is the venue we will be working in\n
            \n
          1. Type of house\/stage\/experience\n
              \n
            1. Straight picture frame (proscenium), thrust, black box, other<\/li>\n
            2. Season piece<\/li>\n
            3. Site Specific<\/li>\n
            4. Avant\u00c2\u00a0Garde<\/li>\n
            5. Experimental<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
            6. What is the process we will need to support\n
                \n
              1. What are the artists individual goals<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
              2. Who are the players on the project and what level of consideration do they need to receive, anything beyond the norm.<\/li>\n
              3. What is the life of the piece, extended or a “one off”<\/li>\n
              4. What is the size and scope of the project\n
                  \n
                1. There is a level of\u00c2\u00a0consideration\u00c2\u00a0related to\u00c2\u00a0expectation (not aesthetic but practical, there is a difference\u00c2\u00a0inherent in physical production\u00c2\u00a0in a broadway project and a 99 seat project, or a regional project and a touring project)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
